First Parish is excited to officially launch our new church logo! You may have noticed it around over the past couple months (on the order of worship, in slides and presentations) and soon it will be popping up in even more places in print and online, and on new FPL merch (think stickers, T-shirts, and tote bags!)
The journey to this logo started in 2023 when the Parish Committee commissioned a new signage task force to consider updating our exterior signage, a process which prompted us to first ask, “how are we telling the story of who we are to the wider community?”

Inspired by our FPL prism that hangs in the sanctuary, we set out to design a logo that captures our values and our vibrant, multifaceted community. Like the rainbows that appear throughout our sanctuary on a sunny day, our open and welcoming community reflects the vast spectrum of our life experiences and spiritualities. After considering several directions and iterations, we are delighted with our final design. Our chosen logo intentionally unites our wider  campus, conveying a sense of First Parish as an inclusive village, surrounded by expanding beams of light. The light beams evoke the beauty of the sun setting behind the fields, but they also make a theological statement. As we often declare on Sunday mornings, we are rooted in our Congregational and Unitarian heritage, and yet we are constantly looking for “the new light that is breaking forth from the holy.” We’re excited about the way this logo will help us continue to tell the story of First Parish, both to ourselves and to newcomers, in a recognizable, dynamic way.

Thanks to the Signage Task Force, the Deacons, and the Parish Committee for their feedback throughout this journey. Thanks especially to Ken Hurd, for his many hours of work on this project and for his insight which provided important direction. And thank you to Sarah Klockowski, who ushered this process forward in countless ways, with vision and dedication!

And finally, a huge thank you to FPL friend Sally Murphy (pictured on the right), our graphic designer. Sally heard our vision and brought it to life in this special design. She is “a product designer, surface designer and graphic designer all rolled into one.” You can learn more about her and find her work on her website and her Instagram.
