Holidays at First Parish

At First Parish we’ve been hard at work reimagining what our holiday traditions will look like in 2020 in light of COVID. Check out these upcoming opportunities to gather outdoors or virtually as we celebrate together and await the birth of the light.

VIRTUAL ADVENT SERVICES

Learn More

Sundays, Nov. 29 - Dec. 20 at 10am

Beginning Nov 29, we’ll observe the special season of Advent as we have for many years here at First Parish.  This is a season that invites us into spiritual deepening and reflection.  It is a time of waiting, deepening into the darkness as we listen for the sacred in our lives.

Here at First Parish in Lincoln, we’ll continue the lovely tradition of having a family light the Advent wreath each week and do the Bible reading. We’ll also see the nativity figures “moving forward” along the windowsills as they make their Advent journey to the creche at the front of the sanctuary.  Join us for seasonal music, readings, and preaching.

FAMILY ADVENT CRAFT WORKSHOP

FAMILY ADVENT CRAFT WORKSHOP

There are so many wonderful traditions at this time of year. One in our church is Advent Workshop… when we gather in the Parish House to do all sorts of crafts. This year, we prepared Parish to Porch kits for December to help you celebrate Advent and to bring Advent Workshop to your door. This year in particular is a wonderful time to leave the “packages, boxes, and tags” on the side and focus on bringing the Spirit home. We hope this kit helps you do just that.

ADVENT BOOK GROUP

Learn More

Wednesdays, Dec. 2 & 9 at 12pm

In December, we traditionally look “towards the light,” the candles of Advent and Christmas, the fires of the Solstice. But Rev. Barbara Brown Taylor challenges us, instead, to consider what we might find in darkness.

We invite you to join us as we delve into Learning to Walk in the Dark,  written by the award-winning preacher and teacher, Rev. Barbara Brown Taylor.  She challenges our conventional notions of darkness and light, noting how many Biblical stories are set in darkness, and exploring mystics like John of the Cross and his classic text, Dark Night of the Soul.  Through storytelling and personal memoir, Rev. Taylor encourages us to look for the spiritual insight and resilience we might find in the darkness.

VIRTUAL CHRISTMAS PAGEANT

Learn More

Sunday, December 20 at 10am

First Parish in Lincoln has a long standing tradition of presenting a classic Christmas Nativity Pageant each year. 2020 cannot shake our resolve to be creative and find a way. If Mary could give birth in a barn, we can certainly re-create the event virtually on Zoom! We’ll share a re-telling of the story from our children and ask that EVERY PERSON ATTENDING consider where they see themselves in the Nativity story and to DRESS AS THAT CHARACTER. This is not your typical Pageant, perfect for not your typical year!

VIRTUAL CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICE

Learn More

Thursday, December 24th at 5pm

This year, Christmas Eve — like most things in our lives — will be a little different.

We’ll gather virtually as a community to worship together.  Our pre-recorded Christmas Eve service will feature some of the traditions we love:  We’ll have biblical readings by our children, the Advent wreath lit by a family,  beautiful music by Ian and the choir, prayers by our deacons and Sarah, offering words from Margit, and a pastoral message from Jenny.  We will join together, each of us lighting candles in our own home, as we listen to the choir sing “Silent Night.”

The pre-recorded service will go live on our website at 5pm on December 24th. You are invited to gather at 4:30pm if you wish to greet one another in Zoom break-out rooms.
